Doctor faces charges of online drug sales

A woman on the faculty at the John Hopkins School of Medicine in Maryland was suspended because she allegedly helped her roommate sell popular prescription pain medications over the Internet. The school is working with the authorities as they investigated the involvement of the woman, who is in her second year in a woman's health practice. She confessed that she and her roommate boxed the pills to make them look like candy before they mailed the drugs.

North Korean meth trafficking scandal foiled

Five foreign nationals arrested in Thailand in September were brought to Maryland's neighboring state of New York for trial. The five men in custody are all directly linked to an attempt to smuggle 100 kilograms of high-quality North Korean-made methamphetamine into the U.S.

Two people involved with Silk Road, an online marketplace known for selling drugs and other illegal items, pleaded guilty Nov. 5 to criminal drug conspiracy charges. A federal prosecutor for the District of Maryland announced the guilty plea recently and condemned individuals skirting the law anonymously through the Internet.

Father of two charged with DUI and drug posession

A 31-year-old Maryland man was charged with DUI and drug possession while driving with his two children in the car. After pulling him over, police claim to have discovered $1,900 worth of marijuana. A mark on the accused man's criminal record shows that he was convicted of a similar drug crime in 2011. The children involved in the incident were not harmed.

Drug charges for 18-year-old Marylander

Maryland State Police say that during a traffic stop that took place shortly before midnight on Sept. 25, they discovered cannabis in a car driven by an 18-year-old motorist. The police claim that their reason for stopping the teenager was that he was driving erratically.

Four charged in massive Maryland drug sweep

Four Harford residents were taken into custody after a drug sweep that netted more than 1,400 grams of cocaine. The area's drug task force succeeded in conducting a wiretap operation that culminated in the seizure of more than one kilogram of cocaine and the arrest of a 37-year-old Havre de Grace man who is being charged as the drug kingpin. The man had been the original focus of the investigation, which had been executed through several search warrants. The search uncovered 823 grams of cocaine as well as six firearms.

Ocean City traffic stop ends in arrests

Two Virginia residents face drug charges in Maryland following a traffic stop in Ocean City. The traffic stop occurred at about 2 a.m. at 85th Street and Coastal Highway in the resort community. According to law enforcement, erratic driving, including swerving in and out of traffic lanes, precipitated the stop. The officers allege that when they approached the vehicle at the time of the stop, they detected the odor of marijuana.

Heroin dealer sentenced to life without parole

A federal judge in Maryland recently sentenced a 47-year-old man to life without parole for trafficking heroin to Maryland from New York. The judge described the sentence as extremely severe and harsh but stated she had no choice because the prosecutors choose to seek the mandatory minimum sentence based on the man's previous convictions and the amount of drugs he was in possession of.

Maryland couple facing charges in drug bust

On Aug. 20, investigators served a search warrant on a residence in the 6200 block of Panther Court in Waldorf and allegedly discovered suspected black tar heroin, various prescription medications, more than 1,000 in cash and $42,000 worth of marijuana. In connection with the drug bust, a Waldorf couple is being accused of drug crimes for the second time this year. A man and a woman at the residence were taken into custody and charged with possession of marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Man accused of possession of 10-inch knife

A 26-year-old Maryland man was taken into custody by law enforcement personnel after reportedly attempting to escape from the deputy who was trying to detain him on Aug. 1. In addition to facing drug charges, the Edgewood man was allegedly wearing a bulletproof vest and concealed a 10-inch dagger on his person with a 5.5-inch blade, according to official paperwork. He also faces charges for assault and resisting arrest. Court documents indicated he was freed on $7,500 bond later that day.
