Maryland police watching for drunk driving during the holidays

On Behalf of | Nov 24, 2020 | Drunk Driving

The upcoming holiday season means different things for different people, but it is still a time of celebration for many. Those celebrations often include the consumption of alcohol. What people need to watch out for is imbibing too much, getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and then being pulled over for a DUI. Several Maryland law enforcement agencies recently announced they will be working together on a special task force that will be watching for drunk driving and other offenses. Those who may face criminal charges due to this increased scrutiny could see a ripple effect across their whole lives.

Six different law enforcement groups, including county police, say that they are collaborating on several public awareness safety campaigns. The initiatives include ones that emphasize seat belt use and warn of the dangers of impaired or distracted driving. They are increasing the numbers of officers who will be dealing with drunk driving, with seven officers dedicated full time to this task force and 20 others also working on this project.

Representatives say that this means officers will be pulling over more vehicles where the drivers appear to be engaged in dangerous driving. They emphasize that drunk driving, though a significant concern, is not the only danger behind the wheel and they intend to address those problems as well. The special task force is already activated and will continue its efforts through the new year.

Though these efforts are admirable, increased traffic stops can also result in an arrest that could change the trajectory of someone’s life. A drunk driving conviction may not just mean punishment through the legal system, but can result in license suspension or difficulty in maintaining employment. Anyone here in Maryland accused of a DUI can work with an experienced criminal defense attorney to get the best chance at fair treatment under the law.
