Many people who break the law never actually set out to do so. When it happens, they may assume that more common offenses won’t have a significant impact on their lives. This is simply not true, as the court system takes certain nonviolent crimes just as seriously as any others. One common charge, many people here in Maryland may have to face is driving while impaired. Even if they don’t cause a car accident due to drunk driving, a charge like this could have serious effect on their future.

A man was recently arrested for drunk driving here in Maryland after local police alleged that he was responsible for a crash. Authorities claim that on Memorial Day afternoon, an SUV heading north on a local road struck a motorcycle when the SUV driver tried to make a left turn. A man and woman on the motorcycle were thrown from the vehicle and had to be airlifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The man driving the SUV was treated at the scene of the crash but did not have to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police claim that they had reason to believe that the SUV driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They arrested him and charged him with driving vehicle while impaired by alcohol. Officers have not revealed how they made that determination. Sometimes police will administer field sobriety tests, while others will utilize a Breathalyzer as a means of preliminarily determining the amount of alcohol in a person’s system. Police say they are still investigating the incident.

People convicted of drunk driving may assume that a fine will be all the punishment they may have to face. However, a DWI in Maryland may also be punishable by jail time, probation and license suspension. This is not to mention the potential impact on future employment or insurance premiums. It is important that those charged for this offense consider working with an attorney on their criminal defense case to give them the best chance at fair treatment by the judicial system.
