A parolee who is just getting out of prison faces some difficulties while adjusting to the world. This is especially true for people who were incarcerated for a long period of time. One of the challenges that you are facing is finding a job.
You might be stuck in the vicious cycle of needing a job to comply with parole terms and being unable to find a job because you are on parole. Unfortunately, there is a chance that you could face a parole violation if you don’t find and keep a job.
Here are some tips to help you job hunt while you are on parole:
First, be honest with your parole officer about the status of your job search. If you are having trouble, let him or her know. There might be help available for you. Some parole offices might have a listing of companies that are willing to give parolees a chance.
Second, make sure that you keep a list of places where you applied. If your parole officer gives you job search requirements, you can turn this in as proof that you are complying with them.
Third, be honest when you are applying for a job. Trying to hide your criminal history might come back to haunt you. Some employers might be willing to give you a chance if you seem like you have overcome the actions that led you to have a criminal history. One part of this is owning up to your mistakes.
Finally, be patient with yourself. Finding a job is challenging for many people. The added strike against you of having a criminal record can make this even more challenging. With any luck at all, you will find a job that helps you move forward with your new life.
