Take immediate action if you are accused of domestic violence

On Behalf of | Apr 2, 2015 | Domestic Violence

Anyone can be accused of domestic violence. In last week’s blog post, we discussed that women can sometimes be accused of domestic violence. Anyone, male or female, who is accused of domestic violence should take steps right away to protect their reputation. This involves fighting against the charges.

What some people don’t realize is that even the accusation of domestic violence is enough to tarnish a person’s reputation. The accusation can lead to troubles with your daily life. In some cases, you might lose your job or be placed on a leave while the case is ongoing. In other cases, you might find that you can’t go home because of court orders to stay away from the accuser.

Parents might find that they are unable to have contact with their children because of the accusations. Some people might be shocked to learn that a temporary restraining order can go into effect immediately. When it expires, you can have a hearing to request the order be lifted. That, however, doesn’t always happen. If the judge doesn’t see things your way, the order can be placed in effect for 12 to 18 months.

When you are accused of domestic violence, whether you are married or just romantically involved, you have the right to defend yourself. You might be facing criminal charges for assault, which can have a profound effect on your life since it is a mark on your criminal record. Don’t sit around and hope the charges go away. Instead, take swift action to start working on your defense.
