Functioning alcoholics need help but don't realize it

Drunk driving is a serious problem for many people. For some people, the realization that they have a problem with alcohol doesn't come until they are facing the consequences of drunk driving is a serious problem for many people. For some people, the realization that they have a problem with alcohol doesn't come until they are facing the consequences of alcoholism. This is a tough realization that requires action.

A functioning alcoholic is someone who can function almost perfectly when he or she is drinking. They might become irritated and angry when they don't have alcohol. This may not be something they can control because their brain and body need the alcohol.

Many people who are functioning alcoholics might deny that they have a problem. People who know them might not realize that there is anything amiss. They might realize that the person drinks, but may not know the full extent. The cry for help might come when the person faces charges for drunk driving. A whopping 19 percent of alcoholics are functioning alcoholics, which means that a lot of these people drive after drinking on a regular basis. Each time they drive, they are at risk of being pulled over for the suspicion of drunk driving.

A functioning alcoholic who faces drunk driving charges might need to get into a program to help him or her stop drinking. It might be possible to enter into a pretrial diversion program or something similar so that the court might be able to oversee the person's progress.

No matter what the situation that surrounds the drunk driving charge, the person should realize that working on a defense is an important step. Consider the options that you have for dealing with your case so that you can make decisions that you feel are the best ones for the situation.
